How many smokers plan to quit smoking and drive the tobacco industry out of business?

once this new cigarette tax goes through. Do you feel smokers are being targeted, and once the tobacco industry goes out of business who do you think the next target will be, maybe the alcohol industry?

I don’t agree with your statement about alcohol, my uncle, my father and my husband were all alchoholics and believe me the effects are harmful to everyone around them, and in the end it destroys their health and their lives along with the lives of everyone around them.
I’m a smoker, but I roll my own because I can’t afford to buy the name brand, but once this new tax goes into place I won’t even be able to afford to roll them so I’m pretty much forced to quit. I think if the government is going to tax people for doing things that are bad for their health they need to tax everything that has negative side effects, that includes caffeine, sugar, fast food, alchohol, any form of medications that have warning labels. How can anyone feel singling out one specific group is justifiable?
Cigarette smoking has been targeted, you can see the negative effects in just about every freedom people are given in this country, but freedom is the issue here, not your health. Driving a car pollutes the air more than smokers do, so maybe we should all stop driving cars, or tax people who drive cars so much that they can’t afford to drive anymore.
Has anyone even considered that when the price of gas began to skyrocket automotive industries began closing their doors? I’m sure the extra expense put on consumers that drive didn’t have anything to do with the fact these industries finally collapsed. The fact is the majority of smokers are at or below the poverty line, and once this new tax goes into effect people will no longer have a choice, whether they are addicted or not, and the result is going to be an enormous loss of sales for the tobacco industry which will most likely drive them out of business. So, when this happens who is going to be the next target? I think it will be the alcohol industry, my husband thinks it will be food, maybe we are both right. The government has to tax somebody in order to find the means to support this failing economy, it is that simple.
BLADESINGER, that is exactly my point, targeting one group until you drive them out of business does not help the economy, there are tons of vices out there, you tax each one a little amount so you don’t hurt the industry or the consumer to much, and you still receive the same effect economically, and you don’t discriminate against a specific group of people. Why is this so hard to understand?

Frankly, in New York State cigarettes have gone up to almost $7.00 a pack after a nearly $2.00 tax hike last year.

And yeah, I quit… the price is insane not to mention the cost to your health.

Most smokers already know they are flirting with disaster and would take it as an opportunity to take the plunge to quit.

I’ve yet to meet a proud smoker… and alcohol is a much different story. Can’t compare the two as far as cost to health and addiction.

  • No,I’ll just grow my own. It’s perfectly legal to grow your own and no taxes on seeds

  • The higher tabacco taxes are suppose to help pay for the increased health insurance coverage from the government. I smoke, but for my 30th birthday if I haven’t quit, my mom is going to pay for the new laser treatment for me to quit smoking. I like smoking, i enjoy it, but I know its bad for my health. People are going to smoke, period.

  • We need to I will have to quit to say F U C K you Obama and your control Packages.

  • well though they should quit – it is funny cause we need them so they can pay for all the social programs with the tax rev they produce and once that is gone Who will Democrats target next to pay for these pet progams ??? will the programs go away or will us Tax payers be the next target

This is an EXCELLENT plan. Get rid of the smokers. I have asthmas and my mother died with lung cancer, my sister had emphezema. Get rid of the smoke it kills you and lung cancer is a horrible horrible painful way to die trust me. I cannot breathe when I walk past a smoker. People smoke in cars with their kids inside, disgusting, and their pets too. The poor helpless children and pets. NO i do not want to be around your smoke. It looks so low class anyways. I think of it as walking skeletons and it sickens me. People are dying of lung cancer as young as in their 30s. More and more educated people are saying NO to smoking.

They need to tax all vices. You can buy potato chips and cookies and not pay a penny of tax. That’s ridiculous, those items aren’t food! Tax all vices….

  • Better hope all continue to smoke, because if they stop, then the government is coming after other means to support their SCHIPP program for children 30 and under and unmarried mothers. I’m ready fed up w/ppl’s mentality of someone has to take care of me!

  • If they all quit smoking to boycott the tax hike how will Obama fund his children’s health insurance fund?

  • Tip and Trik says:

Why would anyone complain about tobacco being targeted?! I lost 2 family members because of their addiction to smoking and anything that ANYONE can do to make it more difficult to get their hands on this poison is a hero in my book.

Also, you are worried about these people losing their jobs??! Yea right, you dont give a **** about anyone, your just worried about your vice. I am sure the people that work in this industry have qualifications to go someplace else.

Well, I’ve been laying off the cancer sticks for over 10 years now, so I don’t have anything to worry about. To answer your question, though, I actually doubt that very many people will end up quitting just on account of the tax. Smokers are nicotine addicts, and even though some of them will quit, a lot of them will also be willing to pay extra to feed their habit.

  • Nope, I buy my cigs from a Native American tribe, no federal taxes. Gotta take advantage of any and all tax loopholes.

  • backlink.im says:

Hey theirs a thought lets drive one more company out of Business.
I bet the people that smoke never thought about quitting

  • Sure, let’s drive all of them out of business, tobacco, alcohol, fat food, etc. This country really needs more unemployment right now!
